The Iranian parliament approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday following U.S. bombing of nuclear facilities in Iran, according to Iran's Press TV.

Reuters reported that the Iranian Supreme National Security Council gets to make the final decision on the matter.

Members of the Iranian parliament had previously threatened to close the Straight of Hormuz, which is the source of around 20% of the global oil and gas supply.

The U.S. government is urging China to pressure Iran not to close the Straight.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked about the issue on Sunday during "Face the Nation" on CBS.

"That would be a suicidal move on [Iran's] part, because I think the whole world would come against them if they did that," Rubio said.
